Armed forces need to formulate effective AIDS control measures

New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) Armed forces must formulate effective prevention and control measures against HIV/AIDS, Director General Health Services (Armed Forces) Lt Gen J Jayaram asserted today.

Inaugurating a ten day workshop on management of patients with AIDS and HIV at Army Hospital (R&R), Lt Gen Jayaram said that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in armed forces was lesser than in civil population, but there was need to develop good communication skills to unravel the cultural, social and personal values and beliefs of each patient, which will help in effective prevention and control strategies.

The workshop on the theme 'Call of the Century: Global threat from HIV, a human approach to management of patients with HIV&AIDS' will be attended by delegates from various Military and Civil Hospitals.

The workshop would focus on the role of Nursing Officers in understanding the innate attributes of human behaviour to formulate strategies for prevention, control and management of HIV/AIDS.

Lt Gen Jayaram also released a souvenir to mark the occasion. Two compact discs containing training material were also released for distribution to the participating delegates. Maj Gen Shashi Bala, Additional Director General Military Nursing Service and Maj Gen O P Mathew, commandant Army Hospital (R&R) were present at the inaugural ceremony.
