Rotary Club of Bombay Central honours media professionals

Mumbai, Aug 15 (UNI) Coinciding with India's 60th year of Independence, Rotary Club of Bombay Central today honoured super achievers from the world of media with the 'Rotary Vocational Excellence Awards 2007'.

V Thulasidas, Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, presided as the chief guest alongside Rotarian Dr Ulhas Kolkatkar, the Guest of Honour at the event.

As part of the event 'Independent Media in Independent India', six prominent professionals who have contributed to various mediums of communication in the Indian media industry were conferred the awards.

The awardees included Prahlad Kakar (Category: Audio Visual), Ameen Sayani (Category: Radio), Hormusji N Cama (Category: Language Print), Indrajit Gupta (Category: Business Print), Bhavana Somaaya (Category: Entertainment Print) and Cyrus Broacha (Category: Entertainment Television).

Commenting on the event, Rotarian President Dr Yoosuf Havelivala said ''The role of media in independent India is vital to providing the checks and balances to our system of governance and to keep politicians as well as bureaucrats accountable to the public''.

He said ''In view of this role, we are holding the event to honour those awardees who have contributed to the success of media in our country.'' Rotary Club has instituted the 'Vocational Excellence Awards' as part of its Vocational Service Activities on Independence Day to persons who excel in their respective spheres. Some of the past awardees have been Kumar Mangalam Birla, Y H Malegham, Dilip Padgaonkar, Dr Ajit Phadke and Aditi Gowitrikar.
