Minor raped in Kashmir, youth arrested

Baramulla, Aug 15 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police today arrested a teenager for raping a minor in Uri, about 50 km from here, official sources said.

They said a 16-year-old Altaf Sheikh took a four-year-old girl to nearby fields at Nambla in Uri, and raped her.

Police immediately swung into action and arrested Sheikh under section 376 after a FIR 93/2007 was registered in a local police station.

Hundreds of people later took to streets, protesting against the incident.

Demanding that Sheikh should be hanged to death in public, the demonstrators said he was involved in a similar crime in the past.

This was the second such incident in north Kashmir during the past one month. Last month four persons--two locals, one each resident of Rajasthan and West Bengal-- were arrested for raping a girl at Langate. The incident rocked the state assembly and Governor Lt General (Rted) S K Saxena made the mention about the incident in his address on Independence Day yesterday.
