Jamir asks legislators to uphold sanctity of peoples mandate

Panaji, Aug 15 (UNI) Goa Governor S C Jamir today urged the elected representatives to 'uphold the sanctity of the peoples mandate and the sacred trust reposed in them by the electorate'.

''This in turn will protect, preserve, revitalise and strengthen our polity by reaffirming the time honoured canons of truth, honesty and selfless service in public life,'' the Governor observed in his Independence Day message to the people.

''By steadfastly adhearing to our constitutional obligations and diligently promoting larger public interest, we can all contribute immensely in strengthening and fortifying our state's policy which would serve in good stead for the future,'' he added.

Opposition to new policy initiatives and programmes is the sacred democratic right of the citizens. But opposition for the sake of mere opposition should be discouraged, especially if it is prompted or guided by petty considerations, Mr Jamir said.

In this connection, he stressed the need for resolving all issues and differences through ''constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, keeping aside personal preferences and vested interests to strengthen democracy''.

The Governor also paid tribute to the freedom fighters and recalled the rapid strides the country has made during the last 60 years of its independence.

Mr Jamir further lauded the achievements Goa has made in different fields since its liberation.
