I Day celebrations; welfare aid distributed to poor

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 15 (UNI) District Collector Ashish Vachchani unfurled the National flag at the Anna Stadium here on the occasion of Independence Day.

He also inspected an impressive parade by the Armed police, Home Guards and NCC cadets.

The collector distributed various welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 26 lakh to 196 beneficiaries and honoured 20 freedom fighters to mark the occasion.

Common feats and special poojas were arranged at important temples in the district.

In Thanjavur, District Collector Vijaya Raj Kumar hoisted the tri-colour, distributed assistance to poor people and honoured freedom fighters at a function held at the Police Parade Grounds.

In many temples, including the Brihadeeswara temple 'Samapandhi Bhojanam' were arranged by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endownment (HR&CE) department.

A report from Vellore said District Collector Pradip Yadav unfurled the National flag at the Netaji play ground.

He handed over welfare assistance worth Rs 60 lakh to 459 beneficiaries to mark the occasion.
