I-day celebrated in kashmir, no report of violence

Srinagar, Aug 15 (UNI) The 61st Independence day was celebrated throughout the Kashmir valley amid unprecedented security arrangements and a strike called by the separatists.

Officials said there was no report of any militant violence during the ID celebrations.

The main function was held at heavily guarded Bakshi stadium where Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad unfurled the national tricolour and took salute at the march past.

Besides paramilitary forces, Jammu and Kashmir police, fire service and home guards, students of different schools also participated in the march past.

Students also presented cultural programme.

Sharp shooters were guarding the streets leading to Bakshi stadium. Security forces had blocked all roads and no vehicle was being allowed to move within the three km radius from the Bakshi stadium.

The mobile network was made non-functional by the authorities.

Officials sources said the measure was taken following reports that militants had acquired technology to detonate Improvised Explosive Device (IED) through mobile.

Reports of ID celebrations were also received from all district headquarters in the valley and Ladakh region where ministers and other senior officers hoisted the national flag.
