CJI hoists national flag to mark 60th Independence Day

New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan today hoisted the national flag at the Supreme Court lawn in New Delhi at a function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association to mark 60th Independence Day.

Speaking on the occasion, he lauded the role played by the judiciary as well as legal fraternity in upholding the fundamental rights of the citizens and to establish the rule of law which is the soul of democracy in the country.

Solicitor General, G E Vahanvati and former Supreme Court Bar Association President P H Parekh also addressed the gathering.

Mr Vahanvati said every citizen of India today looks toward the judiciary for protection of life and property as well as for Protection of his or her fundamental rights. Rule of law and supremacy of the constitution have to be maintained at all cost to make democracy as success.

He concluded by saying that people belonging to all religions are safe and secure so long as institution of judiciary enjoys the faith and confidence of the people.

The function was attended by large number of judges and lawyers including the Supreme Court judges. This was the second occasion when Independence Day celebrations were organised in the Supreme Court.
