Child mortality programme to be launched in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Aug 15 (UNI) Punjab Governor Gen (retd) S F Rodrigues today announced that a programme to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality rate would be launched on August 17, on the occasion of 61st Independence day of the nation today.

Addressing a gathering after unfurling the national flag and inspecting a guard of honour at the Parade Grounds here, he said that this new health initiative follows on the heals of the programme for preventing child abuse which was started recently.

The Governor took the saltue at an impressive march past by contingents of the para military forces, police, NCC, scouts and school children. A cultural programme was also presented on the occasion.

In his speech Gen Rodrigues said that there had been marked improvements in the infrastructure development of the UT, IT sector, healthcare and education system. He said that the introduction of e-Governance for delivery systems had enabled to improve the lives of countless citizens.

Gen Rodrigues said Chandigarh was a success story of growth, excellent support infrastructure, a responsive and accountable system of governance and world class service delivery systems with the focus on social empowerment. The Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park had already brought Chandigarh on the world map, he added.

The UT Administration is in the process of implementing plans for setting up a mega-theme-cum-amusement Park, a multi-media-cum- film city, education city and various others projects, the Governor added.

Gen Rodrigues called for paying special attention to check the menace of drug addiction, female foeticide and environmental degradation.
