Shajapur, MP, Aug 15 (UNI) Even when their limbs were being crushed under the hooves of British cavalry, they did not let go of the Tricolour...

When the Quit India Movement was raging like a forest fire in Malwa region -- including Shajapur, Indore, Dhar, Dewas and Jhabua -- the reins were in the hands of Pandit Balkrishna Sharma Naveen, Prabhag Chandra Sharma, Pratap Bhai Kishore Bhai, Pd Leeladhar Joshi, Rameshwar Prasad Sharma, Ganesh Dutt Indra and others.

Inspiring processions were taken out every morning but they became an eyesore for the colonial rulers. One day, a cavalry detachment barged into the procession sans warning and unleashed hell but failed to dampen the Indian spirit.

One of Naveen's popular poems went thus: 'Kavi kuch aisi taan sunao jisse uthal-puthal mach jaye, Ek aur kayarta kanpe gatanugati vichlit ho jaye, Andhe mood vicharon ki yah achal shila vichlit ho jaye, Nabh ka vakshsthal phat jaye tare tuk tuk ho jayein, Kavi kuch aisi taan sunao...' This region's Shantidevi Sharma played a key role in conveying the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters to women and uniting the latter against the British yoke.
