Bespectacled Gandhi 'picture perfect' on vegetables

Chennai, Aug 15 (UNI) Specially inspired by the 61st Independence Day 19-year old college student Vimoth Kumar exhibited his skill of carving the images of great personalities on vegetables here today.

To mark the Day, Vimoth carved out the image of the architect of India's freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi, on three vegetables: a beetroot, carrot and cabbage. The bespectacled Gandhi was 'picture perfect'.

''I have been practising this techique of carving images not only on vegetables, but also from waste products such as coconut fibre and dry leaves since my childhood,'' he said.

Vimoth has also participated in several competitions and has received as many as 60 awards for his accomplishments.

He can also carve out images of animals on mango, pumpkin, green papaya, ginger root, beet, tomato, semi-ripe papaya, apple, banana flower, eggplant, and more.

Recently, he has turned to carve images of personalities on more difficult materials like the hard bark of a coconut tree.

''You need to be patient to get the correct image'', he said.

''I can't recall how many images I have made, but I did quite a lot'', he said, adding he was planning to try many more images, such as Indira Gandhi, A P J Abdul Kalam, Nehru and film star Rajnikanth.
