Bengal celebrates 60th anniversary of independence

Barrackpore, Aug 15 (UNI) The 60th anniversary of independence was today observed with due solemnity throughout the state.

West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by placing floral wreaths at the base of the Gandhi Memorial column here at Gandhi Ghat on the eastern bank of river Hooghly in North 24 Parganas.

Besides the governor, state PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami, chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb and Director General of Police D Vora placed floral wreaths.

Later, a prayer meeting was held with the ritual spinning amidst patriotic songs and Ramdhun in which the PWD minister, government officials and other dignitaries participated.

Meanwhile, the deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh placed floral wreaths at the Martyr's column in Kolkata in memory of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Independence day was also celebrated in different parts of North 24 Parganas by hoisting the national tri-colour and performance of various cultural programmes.
