Srinagar streets wore deserted look on the eve of ID

Srinagar, Aug 14 (UNI) A Curfew like situation prevailed in the summer capital, Srinagar, in the afternoon as people left for their homes early, apprehending trouble.

''We have closed our shop only to reopen it on August 17,'' said a shopkeeper Fayaz Ahmad in the historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city.

''Anything can happen anytime so we have decided to close our shopS and leave for home early. The Presence of a large number of security force personnel in the area was another reason to close the shops early,'' he said, adding that no customer will come under such circumstances.

''People have alreay purchased essentials, including milk, bread and vegetables for two days,'' another shopkeepers Mehraj Uddin said.

Majority shopkeepers started closing their establishments in the afternoon and by 1700 hours almost all shops were shut.

A Majority of schools in the city have directed students to stay away from schools because of the tense situation in the city.

Only skeleton transport service was plying on some select routes with a less number of passengers.

The streets wore a near deserted look. However, one could see security forces and police personnel guarding the streets.

A large number of people, along with their family members and friends, left for picnic spots and other tourists place, away from these tense situations.
