One In Seven HC Judgeships Vacant

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) As many as 94 of 689 judgeships in 21 high courts across the nation are vacant, the highest number of them in Allahabad, it was announced today.

Besides, 106 new HC judicial posts are on the cards in terms of a triennial review of judge strength in pursuance of a Supreme Court judgement.

Allahabad High Court has a sanctioned strength of 95 judges, 19 of which are yet to be filled, a statement by the Law and Justice Ministry said.

It is followed by the Gujarat HC with 12 of 42 judgeships vacant and by Andhra Pradesh, Calcutta and Bombay HCs each with eight vacancies in respectively 39, 50 and 61 judgeships.

Orissa HC has six of 20 posts vacant while Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab and Haryana HCs each have five vacancies in respectively 14 and 40 judgeships.

Delhi and Karnataka HCs each have four vacancies in 36 posts and 40 posts respectively.

Rajasthan and Jharkhand HCs each have three posts vacant-- of 40 and 12 respectively.

Sikkim, Madras, Kerala and Chhattisgarh HCs each has two vacancies in three, 46, 27 and eight posts respectively.

Madhya Pradesh has one vacancy in 42 judgeships.

High Courts which have no vacancy: Gauhati, Himachal Pradesh, Patna and Uttaranchal, the statement said.
