Flood gains momentum in UP
Lucknow, Aug 14 (UNI) The flood situation, which had improved considerably last week, has again gained momentum in some parts of Uttar Pradesh following a heavy downpour.
According to the Met Department here, the highest rainfall was recorded in Mukhlispur at 12 cms in the last 24 hrs, followed by Chatnag 7 cms, Rae Bareli 5 cms. Kartniyaghat, Chilaghat and Ballia witnessed rains of 4 cms each.
Besides, 3 cms each was recorded at Basti, Turtipar, Ayodhya and Hamirpur, followed by 2 cms at Aurraiya, Kalpi, Chandradeepghat and Bardghat.
The release of water from dams at Bareilly has caused soil erosion of thousands of hectares of land in Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri districts.
About 24 houses and a primary school have been destroyed by the flood caused by Sharda river in Pilibhit.
Sharda has become turbulent with the release of about two lakh cusecs water from Manbasa dam in Uttarakhand.
Besides, Behgul dam in hilly areas was overflowing.
The movement of trains on the Gonda-Melani route was affected and a rail bridge has also come under threat.
The water level of turbulent Ghaghra river has crossed the danger level by 26 cms and 20 cms at Elignbridge and Ayodhya respectively.
Sharda is also overflowing by 15 cms at Paliyakala.
However, the continuous dip in the rivers in Gorakhpur division has brought a halt to the flood havoc.
People in Deoria, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur and Maharajganj districts have taken sigh of relief with the improvement in flood situation.
A part of Kehrauli dam was broken due to overflowing Rapti river at Kampiyarganj tehsil in Gorakhpur district.
The traffic at the Gorakhpur-Sonauli highway was reported blocked.
Water-borne diseases have started gripping the flood-hit areas.
Besides, the number of viral patients is proliferating.
