Silchar, Aug 14 (UNI) Karimganj district administration today issued prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 throughout the border district here after a group clash erupted in parts of the town.
Official sources said the action was taken after a person was seriously injured when a miscreant attacked him with sharp weapons this morning in station road area of Karimganj.
As the news of the incident spread, a mob ransacked shops and houses in the minority-dominated Kanisail locality.
Official sources said Karimganj DC Anurag Goel and SP Pradeep Chandra Saloi had immediately rushed to the spot along with a huge contingent of police and CRPF personnel and brought the situation under control.
Police and CRPF personnel have now been deployed in all sensitive areas of the town. All the police stations in the district have been alerted, sources added.
Police said the injured Shyamakanta Dey(42) has been admitted in Silchar Medical Collage and Hospital for treatment. Police have arrested Altaf Hussain, who attacked Shyamakanta and was being interrogated.
The incident took place when the district was observing a 12-hour long bandh along with Assam in protest against the killing of Hindi-speaking people in Karbi Anglong district allegdly by the United Liberation Front of Assam(ULFA) and the Karbi Longri National Liberation Front(KLNLF).
However, the incident had nothing to do with the bandh, said a senior police official in Karimganj, while adding that prima-facie evidence suggests that the attack was an outcome of a personal enmity between the two individuals.
