ULFA militant held with associate in Punjab

Jalandhar, Aug 13 (UNI) Punjab Police, in a joint operation with Military Intelligence, arrestied a hardcore ULFA militant along with his associate here today.

Senior Superintendent of Police Arpit Shukla told mediapersons that ULFA militant Hemanta Roy and his associate Jaglish Das were apprehended in a joint operation with Military Intelligence from Damoria Pull and a hotel near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk early this morning.

He said that Hemanta Roy was a notorious member of ULFA's '709 Battalion' and was involved in a number of cases of extortion and blasts in Assam. He was a close relative of Hira Sarania, a self-styled Lt of ULFA and Commandant of '709 Bn' of ULFA.

Mr Shukla told reporters that Hemanta Roy, hailing from Shingrapara village of Baksha district in Assam, had fled the state when security forces tightened their grip.

He first came to Delhi and then reached Jalandhar where he had been staying for the past three months with his associate Jagdish Das, who also belonged to his native village.

Mr Shuklasaid five driving licences, two PAN cards, one camera and some defence maps and documents were recovered from their possession.

A case under sections 124-A, 120-B of the IPC and sections 3,4 of Official Secret Act was registered against them and further investigations were on, the SSP said.
