Phunchawng residents demand punishment for rapist

Aizawl, Aug 13 (UNI) Residents of Phunchawng today demanded punishment for a man who raped a three-year-old child on August 8.

The Phunchawng Joint Action Committee demanded appropriate punishment for the rapist and also a compensation of Rs 50,000.

Meanwhile, the accused, identified as Surendar Kumar(23), confessed committing the crime before the police on August 10 and has been sent to Aizawl Central Jail.

Police said Surender, who happened to be the boyfriend of the child's mother, was loitering near the child's grandmother's house in a drunken state, when he noticed the girl. He grabbed the child and took her to an abandoned house nearby and raped her.

The grandmother said that the girl did not tell her about the incident. But, later she noticed that the child was bleeding and realised that she had been raped.

Surendar Kumar, a BRTF labourer, was known as a sexual pervert who used to collect women's underwear. Police have found such evidence from Surender's bedroom.

UNI
