Nashik, Aug 13 (UNI) People celebrated the start of Shravan today with gaiety, fervour and by observing a fast on the occasion of the first Monday of the month.

Devotees thronged various Lord Shiva temples across the district, prominent among them being Trimbakeshwar, Kapaleshwar and Someshwar temples. People also visited other small shrines in the city and surrounding areas.

People started flocking to the temples since early morning and performed various rituals like 'abhisheka' of the Shivling. At least 35,000 devotees were seen at Trimbakeshwar--one of the twelve ''jyotirlings''. A large number of women devotees and devotees from North India were present.

A procession was taken out in the afternoon for the Lord's bath in the Godavari river. A bust of Lord Trimbakeshwar made of 7.5 kg gold was kept in a palanquin and a crown, made of 16 kg gold and precious stones, was put on the bust. The cost of the crown was Rs 20 crore as per the market price of gold as on April 1, 1994. The crown was presented to Lord Trimbakraj by Savai Madhavrao Peshwa.

The whole temple premises and Trimbakeshwar wore a festive look and the air was filled with slogans ''Bam bam bole'', ''Jai Jai Shiv Shankar'' and ''Bholenath ki jai''. Incessant rains did not dampen the spirit of devotees as they thronged the town to offer their prayers.

Meanwhile, the district administration had made elaborate arrangements on the occasion. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) had also arranged for extra buses for the convenience of pilgrims. In Nashik city too, devotees crowded various Shiva temples.
