Over 7000 FIRs lodged in a month during special drive

Lucknow, Aug 13 (UNI) Over 7000 FIRs were lodged in Uttar Pradesh in a month's time during a special drive launched by the Mayawati government to register cases earlier not entertained by the previous Mulayam government.

Recently, Chief Minister Mayawati had announced setting of special counters to lodge FIRs in cases which were not lodged during the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

State DGP Vikram Singh said here that in a month's time (Between June 22 and July 22), 7057 FIRs were registered in the various districts. ''Of these, while 6369 cases were investigated, 688 FIRs were dismissed,'' he said.

According to the DGP, final report was submitted in 607 cases and 1236 charge sheets were filed. ''As of now, 4526 cases are under investigation,'' he added.

As per the figures provided by the state police today, there are a total of 22,381 named accused in the FIRs registered in one month.

The DGP said 3,923 cases were found to be false.

The special FIR drive will continue till August 22.

Meanwhile, two persons, including a deputy jailor, were suspended, following recovery of incriminating objects during raids at 22 district jails on orders of the Mayawati government.

The state-wide raids were conducted throughout yesterday.

Four outsiders were arrested from Varanasi district jail premises for entering on the basis of incorrect names and addresses.

The matter came to light during a raid at the jail by a team led by District Magistrate Veena Kumari Meena and Senior Police Superintendent S B Shirodkar.

''During the verification of those, who had come to meet the the jail inmates, it was found that four persons had entered the jail by stating their wrong names and addresses to the jail authorities,'' Police Superintendent (City) Arun Pandey said.

Rs 1500 and Rs 100 in cash were found from two inmates of the jail in violation of jail rules. Besides this, nothing incriminating was found during the entire raid, which continued for three hours, Additional District Magistrate (City) Indra Vikram Singh said.

At Aligarh district jail, an illegal canteen was being operated on a large scale, where food was available on double rate. During the raid, tobacco and cigarette packets were recovered from the spot.

Taking note of the situation, deputy jailor A K Mishra was suspended.

Muzaffarnagar district jail prison guard Prabhu Dayal was suspended and deputy jailor Gyan Praksh was given adverse entry for providing illegal service to the jail birds. Besides, sim cards, knifes and a ceiling fan were seized.

During a raid at Jaunpur jail, an illegal canteen being operated illegally was busted.

In Meerut, a CD player, 40 CDs, a cell phone and knifes were recovered from the district prison.

While conducting raid at the Allahabad district jail, the jailed associates of wanted controversial SP MP Atiq Ahmad were found lodged in the same barrack.

Besides, large scale incriminating objects were recovered from Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Mirzapur, Basti, Bahraich, Deoria, Gonda, Mau, Azamgarh, Ballia, Bhadohi, Ghazipur, Kanpur city, Mainpuri, Aligarh, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur, Mahoba and other district jails.
