NSCN (IM) cadres arrested, NC Hills bandh total
Haflong, Aug 13 (UNI) Police apprehended an NSCN (IM) cadre along with incriminating documents in North Cachar Hills district of Assam yesterday.
The cadre, suspected to be the leader of a group belonging to the NSCN (IM), had wreaked havoc in and around Haflong through extortion and even kidnapping.
The unidentified cadre was arrested from Lodi village near Haflong.
He was injured and admitted to Haflong Civil Hospital.
Two other cadres of the NSCN (IM) were also arrested on August 11 in connection with extortion from various officials of Haflong. Meanwhile, the 12-hour NC Hills bandh, called by the NC Hills District Youth Congress (I) and National Students' Union of India, passed off peacefully, paralysing life in the headquarters town of Haflong in particular.
All the government and semi-government offices were closed except the offices of Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police.
All the vehicles were off the road and the market remained totally closed.
No untoward incident had been reported so far.
The bandh was called demanding enquiry into the killing of NC Hills Autonomous District Council and his two colleagues by militants recently.
Both organisations also sought sealing of the inter-state border with Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland and negotiation with the militants operating in the district.
