Mafia circulating black money through land banks: Achutanandan

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 13 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said certain mafia groups were involved in the real estate boom and the land deals had become a way for circulating black money in the state.

''Certain mafia groups are involved in circulating black money in the name of land banks. Hawala money is being channelised for purchase of land at exorbitant prices across the state,'' he said while inaugurating the 45th Kerala Union of Working Journalists here.

The situation has risen to such extents that land rates shot up and poor people were unable to purchase them, he said asking the media to expose such mafia groups and black money.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister expressed hope that a welfare scheme for media workers in the state would be formed this year, work for which was on.

Stating that the government would do everything possible for the welfare of the people working in the media, Mr Achuthanandan said it was also decided to include those working in the electronic media in the pension scheme.

Noting that the electronic and print media were partial while reporting, he said, ''every paper and the electronic media have their own interests. But there is also a fight among them and this shows that truth can not be hidden for long.'' The media often projects certain none issues and turns them to controversies, he said adding that ''journalists should rise above politics and look into the issues that affect society. They should use their pen against corruption and uphold the interest of society.'' State Law and Parliamentary Minister M Vijayakumar, Mr Pannian Ravindran MP, G Karthikeyan MLA and BJP state president P K Krishnadas, KUWJ president C Gowridasan Nair, among others were present on the occasion.

Prior to the conference, seminars on various subjects, debates and photo exhibitions were held.

The three-day conference would conclude tomorrow. The valedictory function would be inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Oommen Chandy.
