Panaji, Aug 13 (UNI) Atanasio Monserrate, the lone UGDP legislator who today jolted the opposition GDA to back the Congress-led coalition government today, said he did so ''in the best interests of the secular forces and stability of Goa.'' ''In view of the turbulent political situation in Goa after having witnessed an assembly election just two months ago, I am constrained to believe that political instability and the resultant turmoil has affected the life of the common man and developmental work in the state,'' he said in a staement, noting the ''uncertainty'' that has resulted out of the turmoil is ''unending and unpredictable as far as the interests of the common man are concerned.'' ''In the better interests of the state and my constituency of Taleigao, I hereby withdraw my support to the Goa Demnocratic Alliance (GDA) and pledge my unconditional support to the present government headed by Digambar Kamat,'' he added.

Mr Monserrate said he had witnessed that in the just-concluded presidential and vice presidential elections, ''secular forces of the country have united to strengthen the hands of the UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.'' ''As such, it would be right and proper that in keeping with the national trend, we in Goa, should also united to strengthen secular, democratic forces in the best interest of the state,'' he added.
