Guwahati, Aug 13 (UNI) Accusing the Congress-led Assam Government of all round failure in maintaining law and order, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded its immediate dismissal.

Rebels killed 28 Hindi-speaking people in the insurgency-dominated Karbi Anglong district of the state in the last 72 hours.

AGP president Brindabon Goswami told a press conference here that the ''inaction'' of the state government has led to the serial killings and violence in the state.

''The ruling Congress should admit responsibility and step down.

There is no alternative to it,'' he demanded.

Mr Goswami said the Chief Minister, who is also in charge of the home department, has failed to execute his duties in providing security to the life and property of the people.

''Militants are slaughtering innocents like cows and dogs. Where is the police? What is the secret behind the government's casual approach?'' the opposition leader asked.

He said it was ridiculous that the killings saw no let up even after the Chief Minister personally visited the district and assured the people of security.

'' While the Congress has failed to address even a single problem of the state since Independence, it wants to keep the insurgency alive,'' he alleged.

The opposition leader demanded that the Congress should step down immediately owning moral responsibility of failing to provide security to the people of the state.

The AGP has convened a meeting of the anti-Congress political parties on August 16 to discuss the prevailing law and order situation.
