Women cast vote to get liquor shop closed
Kolhapur, Aug 12 (UNI) The women of Dundge village in Gadinglaj tehsil of the district got a liquor shop closed by casting their votes today.
In a poll conducted at the village by the district administration, of the 1,198 women voters in the village, 954 votes were cast. Of these, 783 votes were cast in favour of the closure of the liquor shop, 131 women voted in favour of the shop and 40 votes were declared invalid, while remaining 244 stayed away from the voting.
The woman celebrated their success by distributing sweets in the village.
Women and youths at the village had launched an agitation since the past few months demanding the closure of the liquor shop, that was being run in the village for over 30 years, which they (women) said had destroyed their domestic lives and turned their men into liquor addicts.
Liquor shop owner Khangave was unsuccessful in trying to get a stay from the court on the closure of his shop.
Later, the district administration conducted the poll in the village, the results of which were announced today.
