Srinagar, Aug 12: A major tragedy was averted by the security forces today when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants in south Kashmir.

The CRPF also recovered a SIM card, which was for a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant, lodged in central jail for the past two years.

A CRPF spokesman said troops of 182 battalion of CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir during a routine checking noticed a plastic lunch box on the roadside near court complex at Pulwama.

He said the entire area was immediately sealed and battalion commander Pawan Kumar personally supervised the operation.

All those present in the area were taken to safer places and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned.

Later, a ten kg IED in the plastic box was defused without causing any damage.

Had it not been detected and defused in time, it would have caused much damage to life and property as the area always remains crowded.

The recovery of the IED came about 12-hour after CRPF foiled an attempt to take a SIM card into central jail for a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant.

He said one Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Kulgam, had come to meet his cousin Naushad Ahmad Ganai in the central jail.

But during the frisking of Iqbal, a CRPF guard found an Airtel SIM card number 9906836296 in a cigarette packet.

He confessed that the SIM was for Naushad, a HM militant detained in the jail for the past two years.

This is for the first time security forces recovered a SIM card which was being taken to jail.

However, a number of SIM cards were recovered from the slain and arrested militants by the security forces and police in the Kashmir valley.

The spokesman said Iqbal has been handed over to police for further questioning.
