Major AP rivers in spate, trough to bring more rains

Hyderabad, Aug 11 (UNI) Major rivers including Nagavalli and Vamsadhara in Andhra Pradesh were in spate following heavy rains in the catchment areas in neighbouring Orissa as the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off Orissa-West Bengal coast persisted and was likely to become well marked during the next one or two days.

Under its impact, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy fall is likely over north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the Indian Meteorology Department.

River Godavari was flowing beyond the first flood warning level at 42.8 ft in the temple town of Bhadrachalam and a huge 6.18 lakh cusecs of water was released into the sea from Dwaleswaram.

The levels in Nagavalli and Vamsadhara were rising rapidly, submerging crops in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts and disrupting vehicular traffic to Orissa, Disaster Management officials said, adding that water flow was likely to go upto 90,000 cusecs in Nagavalli and 40,000 cusecs in Vamsadhara later tonight.

A huge 5.26 lakh cusecs was released from Srisailam reservoir, across river Krishna and 4.42 lakh from Nagarjunasagar following heavy discharge of 2.13 lakh cusecs from Almatti and 2.27 lakh cusecs from Narayanpur by Karnataka. As much as 3.59 lakh cusecs of water was let out into sea from the Prakasam barrage.

Kunavaram recorded a high 5 cm rainfall followed by Eturnagaram 4, Ichapuram, Koida, Perur and Venkatapuram 3 each, Dummagudem, Mandasa 2 each,Guntur, Khammam, Nizamabad, Palasa, Sompeta, Tadepalligudem one each.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over Telangana in the next 48 hours. Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely to occur over Rayalaseema and in south Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
