Flood situation continues to be grim, toll reaches 136 in Bihar

Patna, Aug 10 (UNI) The overall flood situation continued to remain grim in Bihar even as most of the rivers were now maintaining receding trend, while the toll rose to 136 today.

An official release of the Central Water Commission said majority of the rivers, including the Bagmati, Gandak, Budhi Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Ghaghra, Adhwara group, and others were flowing above the danger level at several places but they were maintaining receding trend almost all along their stretches.

According to reports, the toll in the current flood fury had touched 136 in the state so far.

Meanwhile, reports from different districts revealed that over 5000 villages remained inundated and about 1.5 crore people were affected.

A report from Samastipur said the Bagmati and Kareh had inundated some more areas of Rosera town. The flood water was flowing on the main Dakbunglow road of Rosera following which communication with the district headquarters remained snapped.

The flood situation in six blocks - Khanpur, Singhia, Bithan, Hassanpur, Varisnagar and Kalyanpur - of the district was still grim.

A report from Khagaria quoting official sources the flood water was flowing in the sub-divisional office, Sadar hospital, collectorate, civil court, district and sessions judge court, block office, SBI office, powergrid substation, jail premises and many schools of the town since yesterday.

An official report from Darbhanga however said the flood situation was improving and communication on some of the road and rail routes had improved.

Darbhanga All India Radio Centre, which remained inundated for ten days at a stretch, had also begun its transmission.

Apart from relief and rehabilitation, repair of the damaged infrastructure had been taken up to bring back normalcy in the district.

In Bhagalpur, the flood situation in Narainpur, Bihpur, Kharik blocks still continued to remain grim even as the turbulence in the Kosi, Kamla, Kareh, and Bagmati rivers had receded considerably.

Meanwhile, helicoptors of Air Force continued to airdrop the relief materials, also being transported to the affected areas through motor boats.
