Experts stress need for comprehensive cyber security law

Chandigarh Aug 11 (UNI) Experts participating in a cyber security Symposium here stressed upon the need for comprehensive and visionary legislation to deal with Cyber Crime.

The Symposium, which was jointly organised by CII, Department of Information Technology, Chandigarh and Punjab Engineering College, was an attempt to establish a dialogue between crime-fighting agencies, the security industry and experts to create a platform from which information security can be examined from several global perspectives.

Addressing at the Symposium as the Chief Guest, Mr S K Sandhu, Secretary Information Technology, Chandigarh, said, "As the dependence on automated systems and processing increases, so does the vulnerability of the organisation to information sabotage and risk of disruption of business processes." To meet the global challenge there was a need to invest in serious research and development and in innovative thinking, he added.

In a presentation, Mr Jay Chaudhry, Vice Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer Secure Computing, Atlanta, USA, recommended attracting experienced talent; specialisation in cyber security at the educational institutions; tie ups at the Private sector level and strengthening infrastructure and establishment of Cyber security Centres by the Government Punjab Engineering College Director Vijay Gupta, while deliberating on the subject, said "By proactively educating everyone about cyber security and the laws governing the attacks, nation's vulnerabilities on the internet will be lowered down which will in turn lower our collective risk." Speaking on the occasion, Mr M S Brar, Director Information Technology, Chandigarh Administration said "The Cyber Crime has various dimensions ranging from E-theft of small information to big and confidential information, from simple infringement of privacy to serious cyber stalking, from offences of individual hacking to institutional hacking, from simple injury to data to system sabotage, from simple assaults to acts of terrorism, from release of computer virus causing minor to catastrophic damage." In his welcome address Mr Partap K Aggarwal, Chairman, CII Chandigarh Council said "Although the large costs associated with cyber insecurity have only recently become manifest, the nation's cyber security problems have been building for many years and will plague us for many years to come." He further added that fundamental, long-term research is required to develop entirely new approaches to cyber security.
