Kohima, Aug 10 (UNI): After an abortive attempt to overrun the Tsutapela Check Gate of Nagaland by All Assam Students' Union (AASU) activists, an uneasy calm prevailed along the Assam-Nagaland border, although the situation was described as under control.

The site has been a bone of contention between Assam and Nagaland.

Official sources said a curfew type situation had been enforced by Tsurang villagers fearing attack from Assam side as no vehicle or any stranger was allowed to move in the area.

About forty Assam bound trucks were stranded at Longtho since August 6. Two Mokokchung bound Nagaland State Transport buses, stranded at Mariani, were escorted by Assam police up to Amguri in Sibsagar district.

According to reports, unidentified miscreants burned down three houses at the disputed area on Wednesday night and reports of gunshot firing also heard in the area, which was yet to be confirmed by the officials.

At Nakachari in Assam, the Border Peace Coordination Committee of Assam-Nagaland reviewed the situation at an emergency meeting and appealed to all sections of the people to be vigilant to thwart any act of violence.
