Min's speech on minority creates havoc

Agartala, Aug 10: Tripura's School Education minister Keshab Majumder today denied a published report quoting him as saying about the need of wearing veils by the muslim women.

However, some muslims religious bodies have condemned it.

Mr Majumdar allegedly questioned the wearing of veils in the muslim society after inaugurating a new school building at minority community dominated Rangamatia village in west Tripura on Wednesday.

In a statement Mr Majumder said today that he had only stressed on the expansion of modern education for all and urged the students to analyse every tradition and practice in a logical approach.

"The spirit of my speech was to inspire the students on latest scientific development and make them understand about superstitious practices in our society. But unfortunately a section of media misinterpreted my dialogues," Mr Majumder stated.

Tripura Arabic Forum (TAF) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind have criticised the minister's speech and questioned his wisdom of Islamic history and scripture and asked him to refrain from making such statement of religious affairs of the minorities.
