Police commissioner says power to reopen case vests with govt

Mumbai, Aug 10 (UNI) Mumbai Police Commissoner D N Jadhav today sought to put the ball in the state government's court on issue of action against some politicians, indicted by the Srikrishna commission and against whom cases have been withdrawn, saying power to withdraw or re-open a case vests with the government.

''The cases have not been withdrawn by us as it is the state government which has such an authority,'' Jadhav told reporters here while responding to a query whether police was exploring any possibility of re-opening cases agianst politicians, indicted by the Srikrishna commission for their alleged role in the 1993 communal riots in the city.

Jadhav said after a meeting with government officials he had set up a cell, which will be headed by an Additional Commissioner-rank official, to re-examine the pending cases.
