One commits suicide, another dies, 8 wounded in accidents in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 10 (UNI) A 15-year-old youth hanged himself to death while one person was killed and eight others, including seven police personnel were wounded overnight in road accidents in Kashmir valley, official sources said.

They said one Riyaz Ahmad Khan hanged himself following some dispute with his family members at Naribal Rafiabad.

According to official figures sixty-two people committed suicide in 2006 while the figure has shot up dramatically this year and stood at 75 for the first six months of the current year.

As many as 50 security force personnel, engaged in counter insurgency operations, have committed suicide in Jammu and Kashmir during the past three years.

About a dozen others were killed by their colleagues in the camps during the same period. A number of security force personnel were awarded death penalty by the Army courts for killing their officers and colleagues in the state.

An official spokesman said a scooterist Harjeet Singh was critically wounded in a road accident at Chinar Colony, Baghat, today. He was admitted to hospital in a critical condition where he died.

Seven police personnel, including an officer, were injured when an army vehicle hit another vehicle in which they were travelling at Sumbal. The injured were hospitalised.

A girl was injured after she was hit by a scooterist at Badoora in south Kashmir. She was admitted to hospital.
