Panaji, Aug 10 (UNI) The premier Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) plans to open 11 more ''Centres of Excellence'' in addition to the existing one at Hyderabad.

Disclosing this to mediapersons here today, a spokesperson of the ICAI said land has been acquired for this purpose at various places including Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kanpur, Chennai and Bangalore.

Besides, the ICAI has earmarked a sum of Rs TWO crores for purchasing the land and for construction of buildings at each of the 11 centres within the next two years.

This is one of the measures, the Institute has undertaken to promote excellence in wake of the country reporting a shortage of about half a lakh professionals.

The demand for well qualified and professional chartered accountants (CA) is rising each year with the recent boom in market and industrial economy in the country.

The ICAI has also introduced a special course on ''General Management and Communication Skills'' for the trainees to bridge the gap between the students of MBA and CA.

Apart from taking measures to improve the professional standards and upgrading the accounting skills to come at par with the US counterparts, the ICAI has been engaged in meeting the demands for more professionals in the industry.

The demand for the CA courses is so high these days that as many as 60,000 people will appear in the annual 'Common Proficiency Test' to be held this month at 200 centres across the country.

At present, there are 1.4 lakh chartered accountants and four lakh students undergoing the course in the country and most of them are being absorbed in different industries and institutions with KPO and BPO boom.
