Defence personnel rescue 29 people in Porbander

Ahmedabad, Aug 10 (UNI) Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel have rescued 29 people from Saradiya, Marmot and Chaklodra villages in Porbander district who had been left marooned since last evening owing to incessant rains.

An MI-8 helicopter was pressed into service which also dropped food packets in the coastal areas of Porbandar for the benefit of the affected people.

Incessant rains continued to lash over 93 talukas in Saurashtra and Central Gujarat over the past 24 hours. As many as 15 talukas recorded over five inches of rains.

Keshod and Khodinar received 9 inches of rains during the last 24 hours, followed by Dwarka 8 inch, Talal 7 inch, Bachhau 6 inch while Veraval, Visavadar and Lakhpath recorded five inches of rain each.

As many as 78 talukas experienced rains ranging from half an inch to three inches, according to the emergency response centre at Gandhinagar.

The IAF has decided to position the same helicopter at Porbandar today for further relief if required. Two column of defence personnel are engaged in rescue and relief operations in the villages of Porbandar, one of the worst affected districts.
