Speaking to reporters today, Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastav said that the BMC is working on a new proposal on water for the citizens of Mumbai.

According to the proposal, there will be different rates for slab wise usage of water. The first slab is upto 150 kilolitres and will cost Rs 3.50. The cost of water above 150 kl but less than 200 kl will be double and the cost of water above 200 kl and less than 250 kl will be triple, and, similarly, the cost of water will increase.

''The new method of calculation will stop the wastage of water in the city as more usage of water will cost more to the societies or the individuals,'' said Mr Srivastav. He added that the new proposal will not include the slum-dwellers.

The corporation will also install Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) meters in the city in the next 18 months that is capable of accurately recording the usage of water, said Mr Srivastav. ''The system of prepaid meters is also there on the horizon,'' he added.
