10 CRPF personnel injured during training in TN
Coimbatore, Aug 10 (UNI) As many as ten Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured, two of them seriously, during training this morning when a rifle grenade exploded accidentally at the CRPF Central Training College (CTC) II in Kurudumpalayam, about 20 km from here.
Speaking to newsmen here, CRPF CTC II DIG George Francis said five instructors and five constables undergoing training for promotion were injured when the rifle grenade exploded very near to them.
''Rifle and hand grenade firing form part of the training programme. At 1015 hrs, a rifle grenade exploded accidentally near the victims, injuring them in the process. They were rushed to a private hospital for treatment,'' he said Deputy Commandant R K Baruva and Head Constable Manindar Pal, both instructors, were seriously injured.
While Mr Baruva underwent surgery on the abdomen, Mr Pal, who sustained head injury, was in the Intensive Care unit, he added.
The local police had been informed about the incident. The entire training ground was a notified area with thousands of grenades fired during practice sessions.
A thorough inquiry will be conducted to establish the cause of the accident. The state police would also investigate the mishap, DIG Francis said.
Sources said usually hand grenades exploded at a distance of 30 to 40 yards while for rifle grenades the range was 300 yards.
