Minister to apprise Governor of Mysore University affair

Bangalore, Aug 9 (UNI) Karnataka Higher Education Minister D H Shankaramurthy will meet Governor T N Chaturvedi soon to explain to him about various charges levelled by the members in the Assembly with regard to nepotism and maladministration by Vice Chancellor of Mysore University.

Talking to newspersons here, he said he had sought a report from the Principal Secretary with regard to the charges made by the members. Soon after collecting details and suggestions from the Principal Secretary, he would inform the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University. ''According to the existing provisions in the Act, I am not in a position to initiate any kind of action against anyone,'' he added.

Replying to queries, Mr Shankaramurthy said the Universities Act be amended so that the Government could voice its opinion directly.

There was also a need to have drastic changes in the procedures adopted by the selection panel prior to the appointment of Vice Chancellors, he added.

He said he would prefer an amendment to the Act.

A symposium would be held in the city on Knowledge Mission on September 19 in which former President A P J Abdul Kalam, Sam Pitroda and others were expected to take part.
