Governor treats Freedom fighters at his home

Bangalore, Aug 9 (UNI) The sprawling lawns of Raj Bhavan here was littered with white as large number of freedom fighters and their kin attended a reception hosted by Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Quit India Movement today.

Freedom fighters from all parts of Karnataka numbering over 500 attended the function which was attended by Kannada and Culture minister Mahadeva Prasad and Co-operation minister H T Deve Gowda.

A Mysore report said, Freedom fighters joined school children and Seva Dal volunteers in a march from Freedom Fighters Memorial Park at Subbrayanakere here to mark the 65th anniversary of Quit India Movement, which was led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942.

Tyagis from K R Nagara, Nanjangud, Mysore and other parts of the district took part in the procession organised under the banner of Mysore city and district freedom fighters association.

They also observed the 150th anniversary of India's first war of independence that was staged way back in 1857.

Association Vice President M G Krishnamurthy hoisted the national flag.

Addressing the gathering he recalled the sacrifices of martyrs all through the decades of freedom struggle in which lakhs of participants laid down their lives.

He explained the saga relating to the 1942 Quit India Movement, salt satyagrahas, refusal to pay taxes, non violent movement and other struggles led by Mahtma Gandhi, which ultimately weakened the British forcing them to quit the country.

He added.
