Governor hosts freedom fighters at his home
Bangalore, Aug 9 (UNI) Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi hosted a reception for freedom fighters and their kin on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Quit India Movement today.
Over 500 freedom fighters from all parts of Karnataka attended the function along with Kannada and Culture minister Mahadeva Prasad and Co-operation minister H T Deve Gowda.
A report from Mysore said, the freedom fighters joined school children and Seva Dal volunteers in a march from Freedom Fighters' Memorial Park at Subbrayanakere here to mark the 65th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942.
'Tyagis' from K R Nagara, Nanjangud, Mysore and other parts of the district took part in the procession organised under the banner of Mysore city and district Freedom Fighters Association.
They also observed the 150th anniversary of India's First War of Independence that was staged way back in 1857.
Association Vice President M G Krishnamurthy hoisted the national flag.
Addressing the gathering he recalled the sacrifices of martyrs all through the decades of the freedom struggle.
He also recalled the saga relating to the 1942 Quit India Movement, salt satyagrahas, refusal to pay taxes, non-violent movement and other struggles led by Mahtma Gandhi, which ultimately weakened the British, forcing them to quit the country.
