Flood situation remains grim in Kolhapur

Kolhapur, Aug 9 (UNI) Seven days of incessant rains and heavy water discharges from various irrigation dams into the river beds has made the flood situation grim in Kolhapur district.

Although the intensity of rains reduced to some extent since this morning, the catchment areas of irrigation dams in some parts were being continously lashed by rains. Subsequently, heavy discharges from the dams continued to swell the rivers, a district collectorate spokesman said today.

Most dams were filled to their maximum capacity in the district.

Radhanagari dam was already filled up to its capacity and 6,000 cusecs water from the dam was being discharged since the past three days. The discharge from Koyana dam was 38,076 cusecs, while 17,157 cusecs water was being discharged from the Warna dam -- all into the Krishna river.

The Panchaganga river was flowing above the warning mark since yesterday at Rajaram weir in the city's Kasaba Bavada suburb.

The number of affected villages in the district rose to 75.

Three villages -- Rajapur, Rajapurwadi and Khidrapur in Shirol tehsil -- continue to be marooned, the spokesman added.

A total of 616.8 mm rainfall was recorded in the district during the last 24 hours. The highest rainfall of 129 mm was recorded in Radhanagari tehsil, the spokesman informed.
