124 nursing homes, 372 ultra sound clinics sealed in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Aug 9 (UNI) The Orissa government continued its statewide crackdown on private nursing homes and medicine shops to check the illegal trading of fake medicines and incidents of female foeticides.

Official sources here said here so far as many as 491 nursing homes, 372 ultra sound clinics, 162 MTP centres and 662 medicine shops had been raided.

The authorities had sealed 124 nursing homes, 58 ultra sound clinics 27 MTP centres besides 23 medicine shops for various irregularities till today.

In this raid 2086 samples of medicines had been collected and sent to the laboratory for testing, the sources said.

The sale of medicines in 75 shops were withheld for a temporary period as a measure to prevent the recurrence of the incidents.

The government crackdown started after political parties and various organisations made a hue and cry over the largescale circulation of fake medicines and infanticides. They also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and state Health Minister D Majhi on moral grounds.

Police had unearthed a huge amount of fake medicines from Kantabanjhi in Bolangir district and other places. They recovered large number of foetuses from an abandoned well in Nayagarh last month.

The government had already ordered a Crime Branch inquiry in both the cases.
