Water level to touch FRL, flood alert in 11 TN districts

Salem, Aug 8 (UNI) A flood alert has been sounded in 11 Cauvery delta districts of Tamil Nadu as about 60,000 cusecs of water was released from the Mettur and Bhavanisagar reservoirs, even as the water level in Mettur dam was expected to reach the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) for the second time this year by tonight.

The Public Works Department sounded the flood warning in Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Karur and Karaikal districts, PWD sources told UNI here.

The flood alert followed the release of 44,329 cusecs of water from Mettur dam and 15,200 cusecs of water from Bhavanisagar reservoir, they said.

The water level at Mettur dam stood at 119.26 ft this morning as against its capacity of 120 ft. It received 96,738 cusecs of water this afternoon, while the outflow through the dam powerhouse was 21,142 cusecs. Surplus water of 23,187 cusecs was let out through the Ellis Surplus Bridge.

People in Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Bhavani taluks were asked to move to safer places as surplus water was released from Bhavanisagar. More water was expected to be discharged as the inflow was likely to increase.
