Agartala, Aug 8 (UNI) Entire businesses in Tripura came to a halt as workers in the unorganised sector joined the nationwide strike today sponsored by Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) for 15-point charter of demadns.

Most of the educational institutions were closed, the employees' attendance in the government offices was low due to paralysed public transport system including autos and tri-cycle rickshaws.

Citu's state General Secretary Pijush Nag said more than 12 lakh workers including contractual labourers for real estate, shop employees and other unorganised sector directly or indirectly participated in the strike.

''Even after 60 years of Independence, 97 per cent of Indian work force falls under the unorganised sector and though many promises have been made by subsequent governments at the Centre, they have not been fulfilled,'' he alleged.

The decision for the strike was taken in Citu general council meeting held in May and it had been continuing crusade to fulfil UPA's commitment of a comprehensive protective legislation for the agricultural workers and workers of the unorganised sector. ''It is a shame that nothing has been done for some 93 per cent of the workforce in unorganised sector, which contribute more than 65 per cent to country's GDP,'' the Citu leader said.
