New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) Tamil Nadu has moved the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Karnataka from executing new check dams or irrigation work or lift irrigation schemes which are in violation of the final order passed by Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal dated February 5, 2007.

Tamil Nadu in its application has pleaded that the construction of dam by Karnataka was solely aimed at denying its share of water in Cauvery river which is in violation of tribunal's final order.

A batch of petitions challenging the tribunal award are already pending in the Supreme Court.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, on December 10, 1991 the tribunal had directed Karnataka to release water from its reservoir so as to ensure that it gets 205 tmc of water every year while the construction of new dam is aimed at denying Tamil Nadu's share of the water of the Cauvery basin.

Tamil Nadu has also prayed to the Supreme Court to restrain Karnataka from taking up desiltation of minor irrigation tanks in the Cauvery basin, thereby, increasing the impounding of water and utilisation. Besides, it has also appealed for creation of new ayacut(irrigation area) under any scheme pending disposal of the present civil appeal.

The application is likely to come up for hearing next week.
