Rains claim 11 in Nagpur division

Nagpur, Aug 8 (UNI) Heavy and incessant rains claimed 11 people in the six districts of Nagpur division.

In all, 1.367 families from the division were moved to safer locations as rains pounded the division for the last two days.

According to an official communique, though there were no rains today, the downpour earlier had disrupted the normal life. In all, 22 talukas reported excessive rainfall in the corresponding period.

Of the 1,367 families moved to safer locations due to increasing water level in their localities, the maximum number -- 460 was from Gondia district, followed by Gadchiroli 309, Bhandara 205, Wardha 270 and Chandrapur 123.

This apart, water entered 31 villages and worst to suffer were villages from Morgaon Arjuni tehsil of Gondia district. Of the 11 dead, 7 were swept away by the flood waters, while 4 died due in house collapse.

The damage notwithstanding, the heavy downpour also had a silver lining as the water level in 14 major irrgiation projects of the division reached 69.80 per cent of the total capacity. Some of the projects are filled to the brim, the release added.
