Chennai, Aug 8 (UNI) Expressing concern over increase in prices of construction materials, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Founder-Leader S Ramadoss today urged the DMK Government to procure cement from manufacturers and sell them at concessional rate to the people.

In a statement here, he said the cement prices had gone up by 100 to 150 per cent in the last one year, following which government employees and middle class people were finding it extremely difficult to build houses.

The state government had said it would import cement to contain the rising prices. But the announcement still remaines on paper.

About 30 years ago, when cement manufacuturers created an artificial scarcity and hiked the prices, the then government imported cement from South Korea and distributed it to the people at reasonable prices.

''A similar situation has arisen now and it is time, the government imports cement and helped the poor and middle class,'' he said.

The import of cement should be only a temporary measure.

The government, on the lines of procuring food items for distribution under the Public Distribution System, should procure cement and distribute them to the people at low prices, he suggested.
