Hindu Munnani against Rly function in Rameswaram on Aug 12
Chennai, Aug 8 (UNI) The Hindu Munnani today opposed Southern Railway holding the inaugural function of the newly laid broad gauge section on Pamban bridge in Rameswaram on August 12, when thousands of pilgrims are slated to visit the town for a holy dip on the occasion of 'Aadi Amavasai' (new moon day).
Munnani State Organiser Rama Gopalan, in a statement here, alleged that the function, originally scheduled for August six, has been deliberately postponed to August 12 to cause inconvenience to Hindus who would visit the town on that day.
He said inconvenience to the pilgrims would be inevitable as the District Superintendent of Police has said that more than 5,000 police personnel would be posted on bandobust duty in view of the arrival of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and other VIPs.
As Hindus would have to visit the town on the auspicious day to fulfill their vows and pay obeisance to their forefathers, the Union and State Governments should postpone the function, he demanded.
