Hyderabad, Aug 8 (UNI) All India Congress Committee General Secretary Digvijay Singh today called upon activists of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) to come under the tri-colour of the Congress, which stood for democracy, integrity and development of the downtrodden.

Addressing the NSUI students at the 65th anniversary of 'Quit India Day' organised by the union, he said the future of the country depended on the youth. The youth should follow democratic principles to become better citizens and work for the development of all sections of the society.

Mr Singh said late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had laid the foundation for democracy, Indira Gandhi for social justice and 'Garibi Hatao' and Rajiv Gandhi for reforms and development of Information Technology.

He said the biggest challenge before the country was to fight against communalism and bridge the gap between the rich and poor by economic reforms.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, while recollecting the great struggle for Independence and the role of the Congress in it, asked the NSUI students to think about the Congress policy.

State NSUI President Ch Vamshi Chand Reddy said Gandhi Jayanti, which hails on October two, would be celebrated as 'non-violence day' all over the world this year. It was time the students fought against poverty and for social justice.

Earlier, Mr Singh, who is also in-charge of party affairs in the state, released a sticker to commemorate the 65th anniversary of 'Quit India Day'. Later, he, along with the Chief Minister, watched a 45-minute ballet programme by school children, depicting the freedom struggle.

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President K Keshava Rao, AlCC Secretary P Sudhakar Reddy, MLC, and several leaders and students attended the function.
