CITU workers court arrest in Pondy

Puducherry, Aug 8 (UNI) As many as 198 CITU volunteers, including 28 women, courted arrest after organising a road blockade at the Kamaraj Statue Junction here to press their demands.

The agitators, who took out a rally from the Periyar Statue to the Kamaraj Statue demanded, among other things, the implementation of Social Security Act, fixation of minimum wage for labourers, provision of one per cent cess on new constructions to the Construction Workers Welfare Board and provision of petrol and disel on subsidised rates.

Tamil Nadu CITU vice-president Pacharathinam, Puducherry district president G Ramasamy, CPM state secretary V Perumal and CPM Tamil Nadu State Council member T Murugan were among those who courted arrest.

Meanwhile, many CITU vounteers also courted arrest after putting up a road blockade at Kanniyakoil near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and in Karaikal region of the Union Territory.
