Chennai airport to have modern facilities

Chennai, Aug 8 (UNI) As part of its modernisation proposal, the Chennai airport is all set to have a high-tech security system very soon.

The proposal has been sent to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Board for approval, AAI sources said here today.

According to the officials, under the Rs 100-crore project, the entire airport would be divided into six areas such as perimeter fencing, perimeter surveillance, passenger and staff surveillance, baggage control and unattended objects, vehicle movement and access control.

The proposed power fencing would be installed on the airport's perimeter.

High-tech 'intelligent cameras', which can differentiate any object and capable of panning, tilting and zooming, would be installed on the perimeter.

Apart from this, employees of various government agencies and ground handling staff would be provided with Radio Frequency Identity Cards (RFIC).

With one gigabyte storing in the capacity the card would have all information about the holder.

Similar RFIC would be issued to vehicles entering the operational area.

Sensors fixed at the access points can read the information in the card from a distance of up to ten feet, when a staff member or vehicle approaches the entry points.

The movement of people and vehicles in the operational area can be digitally recorded and stored for a year.

The officials said a new equipment to detect explosives and narcotics from unclaimed baggage would also be deployed at the airport.

On an average, 25 unclaimed items were found on the airport premises in a month.

With the new equipment, the authorities could easily detect the presence of any explosive or narcotic substance in a bag, the AAI authorities said.
